De Canadá, Estados Unidos y Chile son los investigadores que abrirán cada día las jornadas diarias de este importante evento científico.

Los organizadores del III Congreso Latinoamericano de Física de Estuarios y Áreas Costeras (LAPECO 2025) confirmaron la participación de tres reconocidos investigadores quienes abrirán cada jornada con una charla magistral.

El primero de ellos es el Dr. Richard Pawlowicz de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Universidad de British Columbia, Canadá. El Dr. Pawlowicz ha centrado su investigación e interés en entender cómo funcionan los océanos, fiordos y todos los procesos que ellos ocurren, como corrientes, mareas, y como estos impactan a las comunidades y actividades que ellos se desarrollan.

Por su parte, el Dr. Marcus Sobarzo, decano de la Facultad Ciencias Naturales y Oceanográficas de la Universidad de Concepción de Chile, será quien dé el vamos a la jornada dedicada a actividades productivas como la acuicultura, navegación, ingeniería portuaria, entre otras que usan sectores costeros y fiordos y se ven influenciada por la física del cuerpo de agua donde están emplazadas.

El Dr. Sobarzo es Doctor en Oceanografía de la Universidad de Concepción y un reconocido investigador en el área de la oceanografía física costera. Sus líneas de investigación se centran en áreas de surgencia, la dinámica de la circulación en la plataforma continental y la interacción entre los ríos y el mar. Actualmente, se desempeña como investigador asociado del Centro de Investigación Oceanográfica en el Pacífico Sur oriental (COPAS Coastal) y del Centro Interdisciplinario para la Investigación Acuícola (INCAR).

Finalmente, el Dr. Arnoldo Valle Levinson, Profesor del Departamento de Ingeniería Civil y Costera de la Universidad de Florida, Estados Unidos, cerrará el ciclo de charlas magistrales de LAPECO 2025. El Dr. Valle – Levinson ha dedicado su investigación a procesos hidrodinámicos estuarinos y costeros, intercambio estuario-océano, competencia entre flotabilidad y mezcla, variaciones interanuales del nivel del mar y vínculos con el cambio climático.

Al mismo tiempo, la organización anunció que, debido a la gran cantidad de resúmenes recibidos, se extenderá el plazo del early bird para las inscripciones al 30 de septiembre

LAPECO 2025 en Chile

Entre el 24 y 28 de noviembre en el Hotel Wyndham Pettra de la ciudad de Puerto Varas, será el epicentro de la conversación sobre los avances científicos y desafíos asociados a los procesos oceanográficos en sistemas estuarinos y zonas costeras de América Latina y el Caribe, a través de exposiciones magistrales, presentaciones orales y sesiones de póster. LAPECO 2025 es organizado de manera conjunta por el Centro I-Mar de la Universidad de Los Lagos, la Universidad Federal de Rio Grande (FURG) y el Instituto Tecnológico del Salmón (Intesal). “Estamos muy contentos por el éxito obtenido en el llamado a presentar investigaciones y estudios en las materias que abordará el Congreso, ya que recibimos más de 120 trabajos provenientes de 13 países del mundo”. La noticia fue anunciada por el Investigador Iván Pérez Santos, del centro i-mar de la Universidad de Los Lagos.

Three top-level researchers will deliver keynote lectures at the III Latin American Congress on Estuarine and Coastal Physics (LAPECO 2025)

• The researchers, from Canada, the United States, and Chile, will open each day of this important scientific event.

The organizers of the III Latin American Congress on Estuarine and Coastal Physics (LAPECO 2025) have confirmed the participation of three renowned researchers who will kick off each day with a keynote lecture.

The first is Dr. Richard Pawlowicz from the Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Pawlowicz has focused his research and interest on understanding how oceans and fjords work, and the processes that occur within them—such as currents and tides—and how these impact the communities and activities that take place in these environments.

Next, Dr. Marcus Sobarzo, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental and Oceanographic Sciences at the University of Concepción in Chile, will lead the session dedicated to productive activities such as aquaculture, navigation, port engineering, and others that rely on coastal and fjord areas and are influenced by the physics of the water bodies in which they are located.

Dr. Sobarzo holds a PhD in Oceanography from the University of Concepción and is a well-known researcher in the field of coastal physical oceanography. His research focuses on upwelling areas, circulation dynamics on the continental shelf, and river-sea interactions. He currently serves as an associate researcher at the Coastal Oceanographic Research Center in the Southeastern Pacific (COPAS Coastal) and the Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research (INCAR).

Finally, Dr. Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Professor in the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering at the University of Florida, United States, will close the keynote lecture series at LAPECO 2025. Dr. Valle-Levinson has dedicated his research to estuarine and coastal hydrodynamic processes, estuary-ocean exchange, buoyancy versus mixing competition, interannual sea level variations, and links to climate change.

At the same time, the organization announced that due to the large number of abstracts received, the early bird registration deadline has been extended to September 30.

LAPECO 2025 in Chile

From November 24 to 28, the Wyndham Pettra Hotel in the city of Puerto Varas will be the epicenter of discussions on scientific advances and challenges related to oceanographic processes in estuarine systems and coastal zones of Latin America and the Caribbean. The event will feature keynote lectures, oral presentations, and poster sessions. LAPECO 2025 is jointly organized by the I-Mar Center of the University of Los Lagos, the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), and the Salmon Technological Institute (Intesal).
